Rolls-Royce Phantom Arabesque: A Bespoke Tribute to Middle Eastern Architecture
Created by Rolls-Royce Private Office Dubai, this unique Phantom Extended explores the intricate geometry of traditional mashrabiya latticework, a hallmark of historic homes, palaces and courtyards across the Middle East. These wooden screens traditionally provide privacy, airflow and natural cooling while creating mesmerizing patterns of light and shadow.
In Phantom Arabesque, the design language of mashrabiya is interpreted through several Bespoke elements. Most notably, the motor car features the first laser-engraved bonnet ever created by Rolls-Royce, developed through a five-year research and engineering program.
This newly patented technique was inspired by the Italian sgraffito artistic process, where contrasting layers are revealed by carefully removing upper surfaces. The bonnet is first painted in a darker colour and sealed beneath multiple clear coats before a lighter top layer is applied. The mashrabiya pattern is then engraved to a depth of 145–190 microns, exposing the darker tone beneath and creating a subtle three-dimensional texture.
The result is a surface that interacts dynamically with light while remaining fully integrated into the paint finish. Each engraved area is then hand-sanded to achieve the sculptural precision expected of Rolls-Royce craftsmanship.
Phantom Arabesque is presented in a two-tone Bespoke finish, combining Diamond Black with a contrasting Silver upper body. The exterior is further enhanced with a single hand-painted coachline featuring a mashrabiya motif, an illuminated Pantheon grille, and the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy figurine.
Inside, the motor car continues the architectural theme through a stunning Bespoke marquetry Gallery artwork, crafted from Blackwood and Black Bolivar wood. The interior is finished in serene Selby Grey and Black leather, complemented by embroidered mashrabiya motifs and illuminated Starlight Doors.
Phantom Arabesque ultimately represents Rolls-Royce’s ongoing exploration of new materials, technologies and artistic methods — translating centuries-old design languages into contemporary expressions of luxury craftsmanship.
